How it works

Cycles per second, under different names

1 Hz = 1 cycle/s = 60 rpm = 60 BPM = 2π rad/s · period = 1 ÷ frequency

Hertz counts complete cycles per second. Revolutions and beats per minute count the same cycles over a minute, and radians per second measures the angle swept rather than the cycles completed — one cycle being 2π radians.

  • Angular frequency (rad/s) is what physics and control-system formulas use; ω = 2πf.
  • Mains electricity is 50 Hz across most of the world and 60 Hz in North America — the reason some appliances are region-specific.
  • Wi-Fi bands are named in GHz (2.4 and 5) while channel widths are quoted in MHz; 1 GHz is 1,000 MHz.
  • Audio sample rates such as 44.1 kHz are frequencies too: 44,100 samples every second.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert rpm to Hz?
Divide by 60, because a hertz is one cycle per second and rpm counts cycles per minute. An engine at 3,000 rpm is turning at 50 Hz.
Is BPM the same as rpm?
Numerically yes — both count cycles per minute, so 120 BPM and 120 rpm are both 2 Hz. They are listed separately because musicians and engineers look for different words.
How is frequency related to period?
They are reciprocals: period = 1 / frequency. A 50 Hz signal repeats every 0.02 seconds, and a 2.4 GHz carrier every 0.417 nanoseconds.
