Frequently asked questions
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. Compression happens entirely in your browser using the canvas API — the file never leaves your device, which also means there are no upload limits or privacy concerns.
- Which format should I choose?
- WebP usually gives the smallest files at equal quality and is supported by all modern browsers. Use JPEG for maximum compatibility with photos, and PNG when you need lossless quality or transparency.
- What quality setting is a good default?
- 75–85% is the sweet spot for photos: files shrink dramatically while the difference is barely visible. Go lower for thumbnails, higher (90%+) for images with fine text or sharp edges.
- Does compressing remove EXIF metadata?
- Yes — the image is re-encoded from pixels, so EXIF data (including GPS location) is dropped. If inspecting or removing metadata is your goal, use our dedicated EXIF Remover tool.
